History taught us that the Second World War is one of the most bloody and widespread wars ever recorded. More than 85 million casualties were recorded and even larger number of injured and displaced member of the community. Much is known about the figures behind the Allied and Axis Powers, but not very much is revealed about some of the strangest images of war that haunt us even until today.

Here are some of the most powerful and strange photos captured during WWII.

1. Foo Fighters

No, it’s not about the rock band. The term was actually first coined by the US 415th Night Fighter Squadron to report sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). The same term was used to describe several glowing spacecraft spotted over the European and Pacific battlefields during WWII. Western Powers assumed that those objects were secret Nazi weapons, although not a single report could prove such.
