19 Images Showing The 1920’s How They Were

For most people, the only real picture they have of the ‘roaring twenties’ is some vague notion of constant rounds of parties at illicit speak-easy clubs and scenes from The Great Gatsby! These photos show what life was really like in the 1920’s. Some of the images have been coloured, either afterwards using modern methods while others, taken by Clifton R Adams using a technique involving placing coloured potato starch grains on the photographic plates!

Far removed from the images we usually see of the glamourous twenties, this photo shows a typical family day out in 1920’s Britain. Children are seen playing in the sand on the beach near Yarmouth, a popular holiday destination.
