English viewers became familiar with Cowell’s temperament on the original version of the show, Pop Idol. Since the show’s inception the judge has been notoriously difficult to impress, and has even become an internet meme of sorts.

There are of course exceptions to every rule and Cowell is no different. Every once in a while a contestant will melt that frosty exterior with a brilliant performance that will leave everyone speechless. The people that manage to move Cowell are few and far in between and that’s why it’s ever so special when someone manages to do it.

Calysta Bevier did exactly that when she walked onto the stage. As the 16-year-old made her way to the you could see Cowell’s face change as he sensed a special something in her. Judge Howie Mandel complimented her on her “Aubrey Hepburn” look, but the teen revealed that the hairstyle wasn’t a matter of choice. A year ago she was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer.

She overcame her illness and is now in great spirits, thanks in large to her enormous courage. Calysta chose to perform “Fight Song”, which further exemplifies her strength and bravery. As soon as she started singing, you could see the judges visibly impressed. Her beautiful voice brought everyone to tears and prompted the audience to give her a standing ovation.

The judges were moved by her voice, and she even earned Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer. “You have gone through an obstacle far greater that anybody much older than you could even imagine going through. And then you come to this point and you make choices, and you made the choice of singing THAT song. And that’s your fight song, and it was so heartfelt and so inspirational, I just want to day thank you,” said Mandel after the girl’s performance.

“I love everything about you. You know what? I just had this feeling when you walked out, I can’t explain it. Just your spirit, the choice of song, your voice, I think you’re really special. I’ve just got this really incredible feeling about you,” said Cowell. “I think everyone in this room felt it.” The girl possesses an abundance of talent and has a strong character to boot.
